The Annual Photography Rankings of China is a nationwide photography selection program initiated by Lishui Photography Museum. Annually, the organizers establish a recommendation committee consisting of professionals and experts in photography theory, criticism, creation, media, publishing, professional institutions, and curatorial institutions across the country. With a large recommendation base, the selected photographers will receive a widely accepted, comprehensive, and objective evaluation. The recommendation committee selects outstanding photography works from the previous year in China and those with a high number of recommendation votes have the chance to enter the final evaluation stage. During the final evaluation, the judging panel conducts a comprehensive assessment of the nominated works and eventually selects the top ten works.
The 10th Annual Photography Rankings of China selected outstanding works which emerged in 2022 as the evaluation scope. Eventually, the following 10 artists were ranked: Cui Jun/Hu Jinxi, Luo Dan, Qin Wei, Qiu, Xu Guanyu, Xu Haifeng, Yi Hui, Zeng Han, Zhao Rundong, Zhou Zijie. The ten artists who made it to the list come from different creative fields and are of diverse age groups. Through various forms of content such as significant historical narratives, social landscapes, geographic landscapes, cultural expressions, and expanded media art, they have presented a rich depiction of the current social development process and cultural landscape in China. Moreover, they have provided an overview of inheritance, integration, exploration, and innovation in terms of the photographic expression and artistic boundaries.
To some extent, the works listed in China Photography Annual Ranking represent the main trends and forms of current academic context in Chinese photography creation. More importantly, they serve as significant samples of the forefront of photography creation in China over the past year. Extensively collaborating with industry and academia, the organizers initiate the event and exhibit the listed works to establish an annual compass for the development of photography in China and collectively advance the progress of Chinese photography.
